My favorites:
Sailor moon
Inuyasha
Cardcaptor Sakura
Fruits Basket
Dragon Ball Z
* side note *
Sailor moon: there are english dubs out there but the japanese version is better because the english was edited quite badly and is very different in some episodes. This is because the Japanese was a little more violent (i.e. they might slap each other or something) and it wasnt seen as something they wanted on the air for our english viewers. So everything was edited harshly. There are websites out there which show you the difference between the shows and what they edited, its quite funny actually. However I still love the english because thats what I grew up with. Also, there are like 700 episodes and the dub didnt cover all of them so for the last season (i think) you have to watch it in japanese with english subtitles, but its worth it. There are also 4 movies, i think.
Inuyasha: same case, although the voices they used are very good and the editing is basically the same as the japanese. The show stops at like 700 episodes but the story line doesnt end so you have to read the manga to know what happens. There are also 4 movies so you have a lot of inuyasha if you like it, which you will, its very good. However at about episode 500 you going to start to wish the antagonist would die already. But Inuyasha, Kagome, Miroku, and Sango are such awesome characters that you will fall in love watching them.
Cadcaptor Sakura: Cardcaptors, which is the english dub, is slightly different than the Japanese called Cardcaptor Sakura. As usual, they edited and cut differently so the dialog isnt the same. Also, in the Japanese, there is a "man-crush" thing going on between characters. I.e. Sakura's friend "loves" her but its like an adoration and strong bond, nothing romantic and the same goes for Li and Julian, Li blushes and tries to impress Julian but its nothing romantic and is more of a way of expressing how much he admires him. Like when you were 5 and you bought friendship necklaces with the broken heart which would say a message when you and your friend put them together, you were expressing a "love" but nothing romantic. The english dub has edited this out entirely because they were worried it would get the wrong message or wouldnt sit right with parents.
Both versions are very good however I like the english dub better because the voices arent so high - well Tomoyo's sounds like she is running out of air to me. Its very cute and was geared towards a younger audience, but this series will always hold a special place in my heart. Two movies were made but only one out of the two is available in english.
Fruits Basket: another extremely popular anime/manga. You will love it. There are some great characters in here. Again, I love the english dub voices - for the boys. The main girl (cant remember her name right now) is a little whiny and it almost "breaks" a couple times. Its quite funny and cute. You will love Yuki, Kyo and Shigure, however there are about 3 characters which are a little "out-there". Thats okay just skip to the next episode..haha.
The english dub, from what I know, stays pretty close to the Japanese. There are only 23 episodes, but the manga carries on.
Dragon Ball: I havent watched this anime since I was 10. However, it is still one of the most popular animes ever. I cant remember but there are like different arcs: dragon ball, dragon ball Z and another one. Its your typical anime fighting show and its pretty funny too. Dont watch the new live-action movie though or you will lose all respect.
I hope this helps! Which one is your favorite?

I recommend Code Geass, it has a complex story, lots of mecha, and supernatural powers.
