Why do Lightning Bugs (Fireflies) only come out in the summer?

You never see them any other time of the year. Just curious as to why we only see them in the Summer.

Summer is the fireflies' mating season, so that's when they're mature, and when they light up (as a display to the opposite sex).

It has to do with their mating season and the climate. Winter is often too cold in a temperate zone for bugs to survive. The males light up more often to attract females who light up only a few times. Every males' pattern is different so, a female can choose which is most attractive to her.
