Poll/Survey - Does anyone use the subtitles on TV?

I myself have used them in the past, sometimes it's easier to use subtitles than it is to understand the person that you're trying to listen to.

I ALWAYS have subtitles on and English is my 1st language. I'm not elderly (I'm 28) but I find them handy because if I don't hear something that has been said I can just read it. Plus I have 3 kids which equals a LOT of noise so you can't hear the t.v if it's on during the day. I also find that having subtitles on helps with spelling as you pick up how words are spelt. If a program doesn't have subtitles it actually puts me off watching it.

I do, my first language is Sign language. I use the subtitles on tv , DVDs, cinema all the time. I can understand people when they speak, only in person. I can't seem to understand anything on tv ... I don't know why. It could be used for hearing people if the enviroment was very noisy or if you had to turn down the volume for certain reasons, e.g. the baby is sleeping.

Some people use them, "just" because. My friends sometimes use it because they find it funny. LOL.

Subtitles are sometimes useful when you are watching something where the English is none too clear. My hearing is normal but British films or films where there is a lot of mumbling (Brando comes to mind) are often easier to understand if there are English subtitles.

Yeah, its also for people who don't live in the West and have trouble properly picking up what the actors are saying.

I can pick up what they're saying most of the time, but I still prefer having the subtitles turned on.

I use them sometimes if I am working in the kitchen and I don't want turn the TV in the living room up. That way I can see what's going on and the sound won't bother anyone sleeping.

I'd have to say that I do occasionally when I'm watching a really good movie that's worth understanding exactly what they're sayin' sometimes due to the loud music or distractions in the background.

I usually have to put them on for the Jeremy Kyle show when he has a group of Glaswegians shouting and screaming at each other. Otherwise they don't get used.

Sometimes, if I'm watching a bad quality DVD, if you know what I mean *hint hint, nudge nudge*

I get frustrated at the spelling errors, however. Not pretty. Popcorn everywhere.

i have one mate who comes round for girly nights when we watch a dvd i always find my self putting the sub titles on as she never shuts p! i never get the concept of the film otherwise1 I also use it alot when my son is watching the tv as he is starting to read so i find this helps him recognise words.
