What do you think of the term "hate speech"? How do you feel about a govt. telling you what you must think?
We are moving to a society that the only opinion you can voice will be govt. approved. The govt. presumes to legislate the hate out of us. That means if your beliefs are contrary to another person's beliefs, you could possibly be fined or jailed (it's happening in Europe and the U.S. is following those countries' model).
On college campuses, free speech is restricted to designated areas. The thought police are here. Will we collectively roll over and accept this nonsense?
This should scare the hell out of everyone. Forums such is this one will be monitored and the U.S. government will use its resources to find and punish you.
RE: firewomen... "you can disagree with someone opinion without taking that disagreement to the level of hate speech."
Therein lies the problem: The disagreement IS deemed hate speech.

I have no problem with 'free speech' but what about all the other rights of the citizen? Disagreeing with someone should not mean you have to be subjected to death threats, slander or any other speech that is incendiary in nature or encourages violence against another. So fine, disagree, make a different argument but remember that it is a bill of rights and responsibilities.
No, mere disagreement is not hate speech.

If Europe is punishing hate speech then I hope someday they realize that it's a mistake and correct there error. In the US we have a constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech and that guarantee has already been effective at preventing the punishment of hate speech. The Supreme Court has ruled that it is unconstitutional to punish someone for burning a flag (which isn't even the same thing as speaking, but that's another matter).

"Fireworm" is right. It would depend on the type of speech. If they are for something that is fine but when they preach against something that is not okay. There is a way to make a point about what you beleive in without offending others. Example. Pro life people can just say that they beleive in the childs right to live and will be the voice for the unborn child that is okay but calling someone a baby killer is offensive and should be banned.Hope you get my drift.

I believe you should be allowed to say whatever is on your mind whether I like it or not! When someone says you cant say this word or that or form that opinion then that is censorship plain and simple. If someone doesn't like you or your opinions they are supposed to be guaranteed that right. This country needs to get over some of that guilt it must feel.

I have no problem with the term hate speech. Just because the term exists doesn't mean I have to agree with its definition.
I actually think the US is becoming a more 'open' country and that's scaring a lot of people.

hate speech is when you run your mouth and someone kicks the crap out of you...the govt. should let "the people" police themselves in these matters
