Are my dogs actually singing?

Every time a fire ambulance really load sound when its in a rush, my dogs start howling and use different scales like lowering their howl but then ending it with a high vocal yelp at the end. Why are they doing this?

They do this because the sound hurts their ears. Dogs hearing is about 10 times sharper than ours, so a siren that sounds loud to us would almost deafening to a dog. Howling and crying is how they let us know they are in pain.
