I was afraid at first also, but Im actually in Japan and I kept hearing so many good things about it so I just went ahead and tried it. I waited 6 months since my last relaxer to make sure my hair was strong enough for it. My hair is beautiful!!!! If you want super straight hair with little fuss then the japanese straight perm is for you. It makes your hair much healthier than a relaxer and my stylist actually showed me where the relaxer stopped and the straight perm started...you could see the frizziness where years of using relaxers had dried and damaged my hair. Another great thing is that my head NEVER burned!! Your head is not supposed to be on fire!! That also shows that relaxers are definatley STRONGER than the japanese straight perm! Its gentler, but does a much better job of actually keeping your hair bone straight! I LOVE IT AND AM THINKING OF NEVER RELAXING AGAIN!

although a japanese straightner an a relaxer is the same thing in my eyes. '
A Japanese perm is not bad for african american hair. It depends on the kinky-ness of your hair, the kinkier the longer it would take. I know several latinas and african-american women( my cousin) who get this and pay like $500, when its totally not worth it. Go to Rite-Aid and get yourself a relaxer.

well i would think twice about perming your hair if it is damaged, but if you have virgin hair again then i think it should be fine. if you want to go with less damage maybe you should try a relaxer. good luck
