Mac computers and compatibility with Microsoft Word?

I'm being encouraged by my husband to by a Mac computer, but I'm concerned about being able to open MS word documents sent to me and having my PC friends open my documents. Are Mac word documents compatible with PCs and vice versa?

There are several programs available for Mac that can open Word (.doc) documents:

    1. Microsoft Office for Mac (100% compatibility with Microsoft Office, obviously, and a high cost).

    2. OpenOffice for Mac (99% compatibility with Microsoft Office, and no cost).

    3. iWork (99% compatibility with Microsoft Office, and little cost).

Yes, but first you must have Microsoft Word for MAC installed on your MAC computer. Then you can interchange documents with your PC user friends.

The retail version of Word for MAC is about $200. Maybe you can find a MAC that already has Word as part of the installed software?

Yes, it's compatible. I made a video explaining more: http://web.me.com/aija_k/Aijas_iWeb/Podcast/Entrie...

You can use Pages or Text Edit to work on Word docs, and you can export Pages documents as Word documents. You can also buy Word for Mac (Microsoft has a Mac version).

One poster was correct about openoffice. I use it and it opens all Microsoft formats and i do a lot of work in it. It works a lot like office. It has a word processor, power point ish program and a spreadsheet program. I would like to respond about macs being over priced. They are more expensive but you get what you pay for. I made the switch to mac not only for myself but for my business and since then i have had no viruses, no crashes and i have been able to do everything a pc can do and more.

Personally I think macs are gigantic waste of money when you can get a comparable PC for much cheaper... But that wasn't your question.

Yes, word documents will work fine between the two OSes. A word file isn't any different on a mac.

yes! there is word 2008 for mac and it will open windows word files and windows will open mac word documents.

If your friends have word 2003 make sure when you save it on your mac you set it to word 2003 mode.

Also mac word 2008 can read word documents from 2003.

    So get a mac today!!

Yes they are compatible. I am a secretary for a committee and I use my Mac to take the minutes. Then I just copy my file to a USB stick, take to work and open it on my PC to distribute it.

    No problems at all!!!!!!!!!!!

what did you save it as this time? if you wish to edit something DO NOT SAVE IT AS A PDF. a PDF file is made for final files to add permissions to them to stop editing. make sure you saved it as a .pdf or .doc file on your mac. it may just be chance that the file got corrupted on its way over to your windows pc.

MS Word is only for PC users, that's a good thing using a PC. He can use an Alternative application like openoffice.
