At the beginning, make sure you've got a decent melee weapon to deal with dogs & molerats - something like a lead pipe. You'll find it's more effective than guns to start.
You end up getting way more guns than you need (even to repair your existing weapons) and they become a good source of income.
I don't know about the easy level - that will affect your experience & make it harder to level up.
The best place to get guns is off raiders that you've killed (at least at the beginning). Get your gun & repair skills up early. By the time you're level 5 or so, you're pretty deadly with weapons.
I didn't bother with big gun or energy weapon skills till later. By the time you get your hands on plasma rifles etc you're pretty much the deadliest creature in the wasteland.
Basically just explore, but be prepared to back off from some confrontations early on because you wont have the firepower to deal with every situation. The wasteland survival guide quest is a very good intro to the skills you'll need.
The good news is that in most cases your enemies don't respawn, so if you go to a location, knock a couple of them off and then retreat to get your health back you can return and clear up the remnants.
Good luck soldier.

Starting from where the main gate is (either by fast traveling or walking through it), turn to the right. Walk along the outer wall of the city, and head to the other side of the water purification plant (the first building you come to along the right hand wall). Just on the other side of the building should be a section of a bus that has been turned into a tunnel/bridge, head through the bus section and down to the next platform. The door that should be just to the right there should have Craterside Supply show up when you highlight it. You can also look up and see a sign above the building with the same name.
