Jeep Grand Cherokee VS. Ford Ranger?

I have a '96 Grand Cherokee Limited with all time 4x4 and a V-8 auto. I was thinking of trading for a 2000 Ford ranger with a 4.0 liter V-6. The reason I want to trade is because I was thinking that with the V-6 I would getter better gas mileage then the 15 mpg I'm getting now. But when I looked up the mpg it was the exact same as my Jeep (highway and city). So I'm looking for peoples opinions on whether to keep my Jeep or trade in for the ranger.

Update:

More answers are still appreciated. =)

Get the ranger. Ford is one of the most reliable brands. I know a person who has a 94 ranger. It has been wrecked once, it was stolen for a month and beat up really bad, and has 225,000 miles on it. It still runs and drives great. Get the Ranger.

Yeah I guess "pick the ford rock on!!!" doesn't really help much....

Anyway keep these two things in mind. Yes, the Ranger will get better mileage, but more importantly the Ranger is a much simpler vehicle then the Grand Cherokee. You will quickly be reaching a point where the Jeep is going to start needing heavier maintenance, more repairs, etc... The Ranger is a cheaper vehicle to maintain, service, and repair. Granted the Jeep beats it for its cool factor, but at this point you should think about your wallet long term.

I have a 2000 F-150 with the 4.2 liter Essex V6 and am Able to get 20 mpg in the city, albeit with a manual transmission. The Ranger is a lighter truck and should get better gas mileage because of it, though if you get an automatic, you might suffer a bit. If you are just throwing the 2000 Ranger out there, try and get a 2001. The Cologne 4.0L switch to Overhead Cams for 2001 and you will get better gas mileage and more power out of it. If you already have a 2000 model to buy, it's not that big a deal. And unless you actually use four wheel drive, avoid it, it's just dead weight for you to drag and it clutters the engine bay and will hurt your gas mileage because of the weight.

Jeep's Cherokee has gotten really bad ratings. I live in the mountains of Montana and my father had a ford ranger. It was AMAZING! I don't know Alot about cars but it was great in the winter when we needed to get up the mountain or hitch up the camper in the summer.

As for the cherokee...it got really bad ratings. Alot of people drive them around here. Including my neighbor. And thedon'tnt seem to like theirs too much. And it swerved into a ditch last winter. So that sucked for them.

I would go with the Ford Expedition just because it is much newer, has fewer miles and is apparently in mint condition. After all, your already having transmission slippage in your Cherokee (common in Dodges and Jeeps) It will probably cost less in maintenance and last longer. The only con i see to the Expedition is gas and insurance may cost you more. Anyway, good luck!

Keep the Cherokee man. Gotta stick with the Jeep pride always. ESPECIALLY in this situation, only get a truck if its a decent size...Ford Rangers are little gardener trucks man. Stick with the Jeep for sure.

well the 2000 ranger might say it only gets 15 mpg online, but it gets alot better than that. It gets around 23 mpg on average.

A 4.0L Ranger isn't that much better on MPGs...maybe on the highway with a 2wd version, but that's about all.

That Heep is on borrowed time, anyway.

The Jeep is much better built, and easier to maintain.
