The show is about a small sect of Fundamental Mormonism, a latter day form of christianity. They originally were a polygamist society but later outlawed plural marriages. At that time some fundamentalists broke away from the main Mormon church, feeling they needed to abide by original church doctrine. These people do exist today.

Sadly, there are many Christian men who think they should get more, so they justify polygamy as being a good thing.
But Big Love is about Mormons and they started practicing polygamy in the 1830s, and some sects of Mormons still do it.
