Anyone have a hedgehog as a pet?
I'm in the process of deciding whether to get a hedgehog or not. Any advice? Are they hard to care for? Anything I should be aware of? Are they particularly smelly animals? I mean I've had mice, rats, hamsters, rabbits and guinea pigs, but you know how people say that ferrets smell, well how are hedgehogs? And I have a female chihuahua, would bringing a hedgehog into my home be okay, like would he be okay with the smell of the dog? I know they have strong smell.

Hedgehogs are unique and fun pets to have. They can be great pets if they are given enough attention. Mine loves to cuddle! However, you must realize that because of their quills you will be poked and scratched, even by the tamest of hedgehogs. I have mine in a guinea pig sized cage lined with pine shavings and it has no smell whatsoever. Your hedgehog will also require a large wheel with a solid running surface to exercise on. Also beware that hedgehogs are nocturnal animals, and will be most active at night. Mine loves to run on her wheel at 1-2 am!
As for the dog, it shouldnt be a problem, as long as the hedgehog's cage is out of the dog's reach. I have 2 dogs (1 mutt, 1 beagle/basset)
and have had no problems.

Well in my agriculture class we have a hedgehog. Hes really cute. Well yes they do smell but not as much as the ferrets we have in there. If you keep the hedgehog away from the dog, then yes. If you get a hedgehog get a white one they are so much cuter. They are easy to care for too! If you can keep then in a plastic tote with a nice FRESH layer of cedar chips or horse bedding. They should have somewhere they can hide out like a log or a bucket cut with a hole in it. Our hedgehog eats the meal worms that we grow in the class. You should check out a book on hedgehogs to learn more.

Hedgehogs tend to be mean, they bite and scratch. They don't do much the way other animals can run in wheels, or play fetch like a dog. They also don't live long, only about 3-5 years.
