You registered avast and is updated, right? Can you describe the problem? When avast encounters a virus, it locks it up. So what seems to be symptoms of your problem?

Windows XP is a category that Home Edition falls under, just like Office Edition. I assume that if you have a CD for Home, then your OS is Home, but I can't be sure. You could try booting it from the CD but I highly recommend, despite the hassle, that you wipe your hard drive clean through a detailed process and then reinstall the Windows version that the laptop runs on. There are steps to this on the net, but it's a lot easier to use a phone-assistant or a serviceman unless of course you've done it before. I'm not too familiar with the error message, so before you take my advice, I suggest you try an find out whether or not a reboot needs to be taken for such a malfunction. Good luck.

Avast 4,8 home is not very god for those who have direct access to internet, as avast, though an expert in Win32 threats and trogens, is not a very gud option for other viruses.
in my opinion u shud use Bit- Defender, speciality of bit defender over avs is that the virus definitions which bit defender will give u today in its update will be available to u atleast 4 days later in avast.
If u are able to regularly update ur antivirus on an evryday basis then AVG too is a good option.

Do a boot time scan using avast if you still think you have virus, but if it's adware/malware/spyware use malwarebytes antimalware http://www.malwarebytes.org.avast/ is anti virus it protects you against virus attach.
