Boat gel coat rough to the touch, how do I repair?

I have a '71 Tahiti jet boat that has gel coat that is rough to the touch. it feels almost like a fine sandpaper. I was thinking that wet sanding and buffing it might help but wasn't sure. I bought the boat 4 years ago and it has been this way since. The rest of the boat, except for the carpet, is in good shape (new 455 olds, new Berle;y jet, seats are good, stereo is good). I just need to either get the gel coat smoothed or is my only option painting the boat?

Thanks!

If metal flake the clear coat is gone and there is no way to repair it but sanding down removing flake.Prep and prime and paint.

I would take it in to a boat yard that does fiberglass work , and ask them what they recommend.

There are polishes for gel coat that will improve minor pitting , and a good wax job will seal it .

If the fiberglass is badly damaged then you might be looking at sanding it , and spraying or rolling on a new gelcoat .

If it's metal flake, there's nothing you can do except paint.

If it's paint try rubbing or polishing compound.

Boat US sells a gel coat sealing liquid you can wipe on. It lasts a couple of years.
