Question for British People...?

Apparently there is a difference between Great Britain and The United Kingdom. As I've never been to either one, I wasn't aware of this. I was, however, berated by one of my British coworkers for not knowing the difference. Can someone please explain? Please don't give me a link to wikipedia...I read it and still don't know the freaking difference. Thanks.
