***Fellow Muslims***- Why should a muslim memorize the whole Quran!?
I have many Friends who are currently memorizing the Quran. They just blindly pray the Quran without knowing which surah or part of the Quran they are praying!? What is the point then?
What I am trying to say is, If I wanted to memorize the Quran, Why should I even do it? I don't understand arabic and the arabic meaning of the Quran? Even If I do memorize the Quran, I can only use it in Salah and some other uses?
I hope I never sounded rude and blasphemous....
Should I memorize the Quran and what benefits would I get?

Assalamualaikum
MashaAllah, this is a very good question.
Firstly I agree with you that learning or even memorizing the Quran only in Arabic is not the complete way to go, I agree with you - we need to know & understand what we are reading in the Glorious Quran, we need to know and understand the Message of our Glorious Quran and this is especially applicable to those who have memorized the entire Quran in Arabic.
I have always encouraged our youth to engage in a study of the Glorious Quran, to start reading & studying it also in their own language (such as English) from a reliable translation, to develop a zeal and a strong enthusiasm to want to learn the message of our Glorious Quran. And it is so sad when you see a young Hafez who has memorized the Entire Quran recite so beautifully for you from memory alone Suras in Arabic but when you ask the young man to explain you what he has just read, he looks at you with a blank expression, I've seen this happen. That's why we Muslims need to start studying the Quran by ourselves & if we uncertain of certain verses we can always consult with those more learned than us but we need to undertake our own personal study of the Glorious Quran especially those who have memorized it.
However, we still need and should strongly encourage our youth to continue the fine tradition of memorizing the Entire Glorious Quran because this is a perfect means of preservation. If, let's say (Allah forbid) tomorrow all the Qurans in the world are destroyed (Astaghfirullah) and they removed off the Internet, computers etc, the Glorious Quran would still be preserved perfectly in the memory of our beloved Huffaaz and thus their having memorized the whole Quran so perfectly in Arabic means it will always be preserved.
The benefits and rewards of being a Hafiz are explained so nicely at the following:
http://www.islamicboard.com/quran/35760-rewards-me...
http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/archive/index.php?...
I strongly encourage you my dear brother to pursue the very virtuous and elevated effort of becoming a Hafiz but I also urge you at the same time to develop a desire within you to want to study, learn and understand the beautiful message and meaning of our Glorious Quran.
May Allah bless you, guide you and make it easy for you InshaAllah
And Allah knows best
May Allah provide us with guidance

People should know the Quran they are memorizing.
They should know the meaning of the Quran.
But there are many, many people who memorize it and don't know what it mean.
And that's okay too.
Because they KNOW it is the Book of Complete Guidance and it is from their God, from the Only One God. They feel that they should memorize it first and learn the meaning.

Assalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
: With Ikhlaas (sincerity) in Qur'ãn reciting, the words are engraved in the hearts and minds of the reciters in a flowing melody.
: Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala has made Qur'ãn reciting easy to remember and there are thousands of Muslims who can recite it by heart, and this is also a sure guarantee of its protection from mutations.
: The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said:
"The best among you is the one who learns the Qur'ãn and teaches to others."
: Reciting the Qur'ãn is meritorious with Noor (illumination) and Barakah (blessings).
: Sakeena (tranquillity), Khair (goodness) and Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala's Rahmah (mercy) descends upon Qur'ãn reciters.
: The angels surround the person reciting the Qur'ãn.
: The reciter of the Qur'ãn is rewarded ten times more for every letter.
Wassalaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

here is one reason
to elevate themselves in Jannah when Allah SWT orders them to recite to elevate to the highest levels.
that is one. There is over a million reasons. And if they didn't do that those before you, You would not have the Quran now, as Islamics is constantly under Jihad from the oppressors.

There aren't many benefits apart from perhaps a false sense of pride(?). If you want to understand the Koran, just pick up a good and original one translated in english. I have one and its beautifully written.

It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “It will be said to the companion of the Qur’aan (i.e., the one who memorized and studied it): ‘Read, advance in status and recite as you used to do in the world, for your status will be commensurate with the last aayah that you recite.’”
(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2914; he said this is a saheeh hasan hadeeth. Al-Albaani said in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, no. 2329, it is hasan saheeh. Also narrated by Abu Dawood, 1464).
What is meant by reciting here is memorizing.
* He will be with the angels, accompanying them.
It was narrated from ‘Aa’ishah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The one who recites the Qur’aan and learns it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribes (in Heaven) and the one who exerts himself to learn the Qur’aan by heart and recites it with great difficulty, will have a double reward.”
(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 4653; Muslim, 798)
*He will be given a crown of honour and a garment of honour to wear.
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The Qur’aan will come on the Day of Resurrection and will say, ‘O Lord, adorn him.’ So he will be given a crown of honour to wear. Then it will say, ‘O Lord, give him more.’ So he will be given a garment of honour.’ Then it will say, ‘O Lord, be pleased with him.’ So Allaah will be pleased with him. Then it will be said to him, ‘Recite and advance in status, and for each verse you will gain one more hasanah (reward for good deed).”
(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2915. He said, this is a saheeh hasan hadeeth. Al-Albaani said in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 2328, this is hasan).
*The Qur’aan will intercede for him with his Lord.
It was narrated that Abu Umaamah al-Baahili said: “I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say, ‘Recite the Qur’aan, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection to intercede for its companions. Recite the two bright ones, al-Baqarah and Soorat Aal ‘Imraan, for they will come on the Day of Resurrection like two clouds or two shades or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Soorat al-Baqarah for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it.”
It was narrated that Buraydah said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Whoever reads the Qur’aan, learns it and acts in accordance with it, on the Day of Resurrection his parents will be given a crown to wear whose light will be like the light of the sun, and his parents will be given garments which far surpass everything to be found in this world. They will say, “Why have we been given this to wear?” It will be said, “Because your child learned the Qur’aan.”’”
