Missing my temporary crown! Please help!?

I am in my early 20s and have terrible teeth. A year ago, I had to have a root canal and a crown on one of my molars. A few weeks ago, that crown... well, it sort of crumbled. I wasn't eating anything hard (a tortilla!).

I went in to my dentist and for some reason they drilled my tooth ridiculously small, to the point they had to use a laser around my tooth to determine what size to make the new crown. They fitted me with a temporary, and I have an appointment for the permanent in a few days.

Today (just now), I was eating a Milano cookie. After swallowing said cookie, I noticed a hollow feeling next to my cheek. My tongue felt an empty space - my crown must have fallen off, and I swallowed it without noticing!

What am I supposed to do? Is it really necessary to get fitted for a new temporary when I'm getting my permanent in five days? What if I eat and drink as little as possible? The tooth isn't painful at all, and I'm terrified about the cost. (None of this has been covered by insurance - the broken crown was considered too new.)

Any advice would be very helpful.

You just need to call the dentist and have the temporary replaced. It's not a big deal. Temporary crowns are sort of a one size fits all deal, since they are only meant to be in place a short time. It is not a good idea to just leave it open, since eating and such can damage the prep area. You aren't the first one to swallow a temporary crown either, so don't feel alone there. I don't think the dentist should charge for the replacement temporary crown, or at least not much. Just call the office and explain things.

I don't know, it's your call really. If it is just a few days away there probably isn't any harm in waiting. The cost shouldn't deter you though, I'd be shocked if they were to charge you to fix a temp crown, that'd be a racket!! The biggest concern is if you manage to break the tooth in the interim, that would be alot of wasted time and more importantly money. You should call them tomorrow and ask these questions, that's for sure what I'd do. Be sure and call first thing though, it's fairly common for dental offices to close noonish on fridays. If you can't get in though it's no big deal, just be careful.

    Common to happen.

It isn't absolutely necessary to get fitted for another temp since your permanent is being put on in 5 days. (They put temps on for cosmetics, feel, and to keep your opposing teeth from shifting.)

I might give the dentist office a call and just have one of the front desk girls ask your doctor about it -- because they know exactly what is going on with your mouth, and have records in front of them. They could get back to you on whether you need to come in , or can wait the 5 days sans a temp.

You should be fine, again, without it though.

    Just protect that buildup!

As I think more about it -- You might need to err on the side of caution, and go ahead and get the temp popped on. --(Really quick procedure).. for mere protection.

I like that this guy told us it was a 'Milano' cookie.
