Muslims - enlighten me a bit about Ramadan.?

There is a section in YA called Ramadan which seems to be a portmanteaux for general Islamic opinions. I understood that Ramadan is a particularly sacred time for Muslims but it only happens once a year.

Has 'Ramadan' become a carry-all word under which Muslims gather to discuss Islam on e-media such as YA.?

Finally, don't be put off answering me when you see that I often support the BNP on other posts on YA. I am not anti-Islam; I am simply anti-Fundamentalism in any religion. Sensible answers will enable me to engage in deeper understanding of Islamic issues and feelings.

Update:

Edit.

LikeNang. Your answer confirms what I thought, and has put my mind at rest.if I as a non-Muslim, want to find a forum where I can access Islamic opinion and where I can pose questions without feeling to be a threat to Islamic types. Thank you.

Update 2:

George 23

Thank you too for a very lucid explanation of the Observance of Ramadan. I was more concerned about my rights to access and speak on the YA Ramadan pages, without insulting Islamic types. I'd like to cut and keep your answer, however, if you reply and give me permission to do so. I do not, myself, subscribe to Islam, but I would defend to the death the rights of any Islamist who lives in my country and does not seek to debase their religion and our own laws, to manifest their religion subject to the customs of Great Britain.

0n a sweltering hot day your throat has become parched. You are in the privacy of your home and the refreshingly cool water is within hand's reach. You desire to drink it, but you do not. Why? Simply because you are fasting and while fasting you cannot eat and drink. If somebody prompts you to nevertheless drink it and says: "Nobody is watching," you will immediately rebuke him with the words: "But Allah is watching!"

Ramadan (Arabic: رمضان‎) is an Islamic religious observance that takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar; the month in which the Qur'an, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, and smoking from sunrise until sunset. Fasting is meant to teach the person patience, modesty and spirituality. Ramaḍān is a time to fast for the sake of Allah, and to offer more prayer than usual. Muslims also believed through good actions, they get rewarded twice than they normally can achieve. During Ramaḍān, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds.

Hi. Oh, Ramadans basically an Islamic month, in which all Muslims fast for the month (from dawn till disk), its a duty (one of the 5 pillars-the others are believing in God, praying 5 times a day, paying Zakat/money to poor 2.5 % of anual savings and doing Hajj/pilgrimage at least once in your lifetime), a very sacred month. Muslims believe the devil is locked up in this month, so all bad deeds are from you. We try to do even more good than usual. Pray even more and read more Quran, holy things etc. Be better people etc. Its a month where all Muslim who are able to-fast.

Ramadan is the Holy Month of fasting for Muslims. Yahoo was kind enough to give a section named Ramadan where Muslims feel more comfortable "gathering" - not because Ramadan is perpetual.

I'm not muslim, but I do know about it from my ex-cleaning lady. It's a summer-time holiday and it lasts about a month. It's like, you're not allowed to eat the ENTIRE day, and only at night, once the sun has set, are you allowed to eat. So for about a month, you starve yourself by day and eeat only at night. And the reason is so that you should feel what the poor, hungry people feel and develop compassion and sympathy towards them and help them out. Pretty nice idea, but I have compassion for the poor without fasting and I do try to help them out in any way I can... like if I see there's a hungry person I would give him/her something to eat and I give charity etc.
