As far as whether it would look professional, that's up to you. It's like asking if you paint an picture, will it look professional? If you're good, it will.

Depending on the type of site you want, WordPress might make it easier.

I created my website using iWeb. It's really, really easy. So if you happen to have a Mac I would definitely recommend that. It basically does the work for you, and you don't really have to have any knowledge of html. As far as the free.. I'm not sure. I paid for my domain, it was only 25 dollars per year. Which isn't too bad, imo.

Whether it looks pro or not is up to you, the designer. Pretty much all free sites are limited in use of web tools you need to have a really pro site.
