plates breaking directly in half?

i had a plate and i dropped a plastic jar on it when i opened a cabinate and the plate broke directly in half i threw it away and my friend kept telling me that a plate hasn't brocken directly in half in years or something. i honestly think if was just a junk plate it broke in to pieces and in a straight line is my friend right?

    It's common for things to break directly in half when there is a seam in the material.
