What should you feed a puppy to fatten him up?
The mom has already stopped feeding the puppies when they were only 3 weeks. He is 4 weeks now but has dropped weight. We are getting him next week after his foster mother brings him to the vet. What is good to feed him to put weight back on.? Is there a brand of food that will do that?

You should NOT take the puppy home before at LEAST 8 weeks with his mother and litter mates! It is very important not to separate the mom and puppies until at least 8 weeks old.
There is a lot more to consider than just whether or not the mother has weaned them already. AND, the owner of the mother should be giving him something to eat to put weight back on him before you bring him home at 8 weeks......she shouldnt be asking you to do that.
What if something else is causing him to lose weight? He could be sick or something that could cause you a LOT of money in vet bills. 4 or 5 weeks is WAY too young to be separated from the mother and litter!!!!!!

The puppy should stay with its mother and siblings for at least another 5 weeks. They need this time to socialize and learn how to be dogs. It also helps them learn what is appropriate and what is not. By taking a puppy from the mother too early, you can have very serious behavioural problems in the future.
A 3 week old puppy still needs its mothers milk. As the mother has stopped feeding the puppies, it will need some milk replacer which can be gotten at some pet stores or from a vet. The puppy should not be weaned until 5-7 weeks old.
If the 'breeder' is trying to get you to take a 3 week puppy and raise it yourself, run away fast. They don't know what they are doing. Even if it is a rescue, they should know better than to adopt out a puppy that is that young. I highly doubt they would allow an inexperienced person to hand raise a puppy.
Puppies don't need to get ''fattened up". Obesity is a huge problem with pets and should be avoided. A puppy should be a bit on the lean side and not pudgy. A vet or reputable breeder will know how much and how often to feed the puppy.

for the half the ppl suggesting dry meat, please remember this is a 5 week puppy and if it has no mother should be on puppy formula. A person who doesn't fully know about feeding a puppy that young should not be caring for it. If it's skinny then it has been deprived of the proper nutrition a puppy that age needs and instead of sitting on the computer asking questions that are getting the poor puppy no where you should be taking it in to an spca, where they don't euthenize them, and they'll know how to take care of it. If you want to keep it you can go back when it's ready to be in a home and adopt it. At least then it'll have its shots too. Keep doing what you're doing, you'll kill it.

The mother stopped feeding the puppies too soon and should have been taken to a vet immediately. You can buy puppy milk replacer at almost any pet or feed store. I don't recommend adopting this dog. Puppies taken too young from their mothers (before 8 weeks old) often grow up to be dogs with incurable behavior problems of destructive chewing and biting. Perhaps the breeder can be persuaded to keep all the puppies and their mother together and bottle feed the pups herself until the pups are 8 weeks old. That would be the responsible thing to do.

It could be a bad sign that the pup is losing weight at such a young age. He could be ill...If anything is wrong with him the vet should find it.
Otherwise, high quality puppy food is the best for your little guy. Purina puppy chow is full of protein and the nutrients that puppies need to grow. It may help to moisten the puppy food with a little water at first.
Good luck!

If you feed a puppy somthing that will fatten it up quickly it might become overweight without you knowing it. Slightly decrease the amount of fatty foods each week.

He is old enough now to be on good quality puppy food, feed him 4 times a day. Add boiled tiny pieces of meat and chicken (no bones) to his diet, no salt or sugar.

did you try regular infant formula? You figure theres tons of proteins in formula thats essential for growth. Maybe it will help your puppy. Or you can go to petco or an animal store were you live and see if they have puppy formula and a puppy bottle hope that helps

Any kind of good quality puppy chow will be fine as it has all the nutrients he will need to add weight. don't worry, he'll gain weight as he gets older.
