Why do people feel the need of talking suicidal people out of killing themselves?

i am sure if a person is suicidal they have pretty good reasons for wanting to end his or her life

I would have to say that it depends on who's doing the talking and who's planning the suicide. Different people would have different motivations to talk people out of suicide. For example if it was a relative, they wouldn't want their relative dead, and many religions feel as though there is a very strong punishment for suicide in the afterlife, however I might want to talk a jumper off a ledge because he's standing over my car. Typically speaking, it's out of self interest (whether people admit it or not). Even a supposedly selfless act of talking a stranger out of suicide can have selfish motivations. A religious person thinks doing kind things grants them permission into paradise, or people get a good feeling from helping others. Bottom line, people are still looking out for numero uno.

  • That is a great question. I have no idea though why we do that.

I had an exboyfriend who always threatened to kill himself. After a while I just gave up on helping him.

In my opinion though, it's usually the people who don't talk about suicide you have to worry about. The people who constantly talk about it just want attention but maybe I am wrong. I am not a physiologist.

Maybe we try to help because we don't want people to give up on life. If you are dead you can't really enjoy all the beauty that is to behold.

Or maybe we just do it so we don't feel bad when the person decides to follow through. We can feel like we tried to save a life rather then just watching.

I am one of those people if someone I ever knew wants to end their life then I feel the need to help. To me it just a conscious thing. If a person sees someone that wants to end their life they feel it's a duty to do all they can do to help. But, you are right to if they want to end their life it's their problem.

because if they end their life, they wont have the choice to change their mind the next day. its very sad. thats why i feel no one should be commiting suicide, theres always more to life, and i think its sad some people just end it.

Because most people, when emotional to the point of killing themselves, are more or less entirely irrational. In simple terms, "dey brain ain't workin' right."

Normally people are empathetic to their predicament and want them to fix it in a healthier way than dying, much like most people would stop someone from shooting up heroin to cure a headache.

i think people would properly be so cruel. If it had happened to me (me being your cousins ex-boyfriend) i could be devastated. somebody I shared my existence with at one element harm theirselves because of the fact of ME. it would linger there for an eternity and that i might never recover from it. yet this is purely me, some people beg to selection. i'm sorry approximately Clare, too. :( my condolences.

Would you want the death of another on your hands when you could have done something about it?

I really don't know but it could be a sign of love! If it's your family, it's cause they love you!
