Simple Answer they took out a bank loan.That was the only way they could of matched Portland's offer.

No matter how much money another team offers you the team you are already with can match, but it will dent the teams cap space a lot. That is why when the bid gets to high the original team pulls out because they don't have the legit money for him like the other teams do.

I thought the owner had to take out a loan to cover his Guarenteed money right off the bat. atleast that's what i was reading in some of the articles on it.
