Whatever Happened To The MiniDisc?

As far as I remember the MiniDisc was introduced in the 1990's to replace cassette tapes or CDs. However they never really became popular. Does anyone know why this is or even if there are still some available to this day?

BQ: Have you ever bought a MiniDisc and if so what was the last one you bought?

BQ2: How was your day?

BQ3: What album have you been listening to a lot lately?

Update:

PJ,

Yeah to be honest I've never heard of a betamax lol.

I would guess that at that point people had already committed to CDs and were like "Maaaaan, I ain't buying another version of Dark Side or Exile or whatever."

It was rough enough replacing my Pocket Rocker.

Besides that I thought of this. What was the real incentive to buy what is essentially just a smaller CD? As far as I know it didn't boast superior sound or feature anything new, it was just like a Laser Disc that lost a lot of weight.

To add to all the other reasons, the mini disc couldn't be played in every CD player. It had to be one with the plastic piece in the middle that you would press the CD onto, like in portable CD players. I had an 8 disc CD changer in my shelf system and it couldn't hold the mini disc because it didn't have the piece in the middle.

BQ: I got one for free with a large drink at the movies one time. Some promotional crap for a failed wannabe pop star.

BQ2: Awesome, no work so I have been on Y!A all day and I have also gotten some reading done.

CD's were still new...they introduced it way too soon. And, by the time CD's were around long enough, we had the MP3. It's just another failed experiment like Sega Saturn, or any other crap they tried to serve us with in the 90s. Wait until the economy gets back to where it was, you'll see more failed inventions.

BQ: No. CD's and Tapes for me.

    BQ2: Horrible.

I remember everyone perceiving it as redundant and expensive technology. I suppose the disregarded Laserdisc is the one serving the drinks and Blu-Ray is asking the desk clerk if the resort is accepting applications.

bq: Never. But I still have a couple of milk crates filled with cassette tapes.

    bq2: Rainy, lazy, peaceful.

bq3: "Magic Potion" by The Black Keys

I believe the MiniDisc is sitting on a beach somewhere, sipping on a Mai Tai and sharing "I coulda been a contender" stories with BetaMax.*

    BQ-Nope

    BQ2-Can't complain

BQ3-I've had my player on random lately, which is a change for me. Usually I'm an album listener.

*The BetaMax reference will separate the kids from the old fogeys, I bet.
