I am 13 and I want to be a chef. What are some good things to do to prepare for the future. I love to cook and I cook dinner regularly.

Taking Home Ec and any catering courses your school offers is a good start. As well as this, as soon as you are old enough, apply for jobs in kitchens. A lot of the "famous" chefs you might see on TV didn't get there by going to culinary schools, they worked their way up from kitchen hands.
The pay a chef earns is dependent on the type of chef, and the place that they work in. If you work in a hotel like the Hilton, for instance, you will most likely earn more than a chef working in a small restaurant. A head chef will also earn more than a sous chef.
Finally, don't listen to what anyone says about typical hours of a chef unless they are one. There is no such thing. They work on rotation. A restaurant chef will generally either work lunch or dinner, beginning in the early hours of the morning for the lunch shift, and finishing around five or six pm. A chef working dinner hours will start around two or three pm and finish anywhere between eleven pm and two am.
Bakers start work around three am and are done by eleven am.
With the hours calculated for a "typical" chef, you have to include things like prep and cleaning, because not every kitchen can afford kitchen hands.
One more thing that you will really want to know Matt. Being a chef is a very hard and long road. You have to get used to being yelled at almost constantly, being blamed for things that aren't your fault and not talking back. A kitchen hand in a restaurant is the first person to be blamed for anything, even if they were nowhere near the site of the incident, and arguing about it may cost you the job.
If you do want to prepare though, I recommend you try to branch out what you cook. Try making different dishes, and convince your parents to take you out to the local markets. Use only fresh ingredients in your cooking, and try to learn as much as you can, even if it's just by watching cooking shows on TV!

Stay focused and tinker with recipes. Add this, take away that...show your creativity. Now would be a good time to learn knife skills too.
For some it is a labor of love. Unless you are sous, executive or pastry chef, the money varies. Hours depend on the place you are at. Restaurants are notorious for long night hours. Some pastry chefs can start at 2 a.m. And others schedules can be close to 9-5.
One piece of advice, go to culinary school. It will save you so much time later on. Good luck!

Well, to answer your questions, I'd need to know what type of chef you would like to be...chef in a restaurant, or in a hotel, catering chef, personal chef. Do you want to focus on baking and pastries or more on the savory side? My suggestion, try to volunteer in a kitchen, see if it is something you would actually like to do, you may find that there are specific things you really enjoy doing and want to pursue long term. I would also suggest practicing some basics, learn what the basic chopping techniques are, basic sauces, try to work with different cuisines and familiarize yourself with the as many items in the grocery store as possible.

take home ec, get in the kitchen as often as possible, work at a restaurant when your old enough, and read up on culinary schools you may be interested it.
