newer hard drive into older computer operating system question?

If i do that then how do i do the OS thing if i don't have the disks for either computer...i have xp on the good hard drive and windows millenium edition on the old fried hard drive...I bought the xp new and if i remember right it didn't come with any OS disks.

    I once moved a hard drive (with OS installed) from one computer to another. You really shouldn't have to wipe the OS. If you put the new hard drive in the old computer, the first time you boot it Windows will spend some time finding drivers for the different hardware. Hopefully, being an older computer, Windows will be able to find all the drivers it needs. As long as some hardware at least partially works (motherboard drivers, video card, and network card), Windows should be able to find the correct drivers from Windows Update.

    Since you don't have the original disk, you'd end up doing the same thing if you used a "vanilla" win XP install CD.

    Source(s): I did the same thing after one computer's motherboard got zapped by lightning coming in thru the modem, but the hard drive survived.
