windows vista installation cd that came with my laptop?

Can i run the Windows vista home basic installation cd on my desktop and get vista on it and it work? or will i still have to buy a key?

    legally and practically, no.

    The disk that came with your laptop is designed to work only with that model and brand ( at least one family of models). The license key that works for this disk is a special code that works on volume licenses for that company.

    You need to get both a disk and a license ( I don't think you can buy them separately anyway) to install Vista on another computer.

    yes it will work on any computer but not worth installing it on a computer thats built for xp, that would be downgrading the computer....home basic is only a starter pack and its very slow, buy home premium, its allot faster [£67]
