What do you think of a female taking an auto mechanics class?
I'm an 18 year old female and I really want to take an auto mechanics class at community college along with my other classes. Not necessarily because I want to be a mechanic, but I think a girl should know these things. I'm just afraid that I will be discriminated against because I'm a woman, or that I won't be able to keep up with the men.
What do you think?
& Men, what would you think about women who take auto mechanics classes?

One of the mechanics working for me is female, and is one of my best.
Will you get a few smart a-- comments from the guys? Yeah, from a few maybe, but there's always a few idiots. As far as keeping up with the men, don't worry, you'll do better than some, not as well as others. Just having male DNA doesn't mean they all understand cars.
By learning about automotive basics, you will probably save a fortune over the rest of your life by doing some repairs by yourself, and being able to detect a garage that is trying to take advantage of a woman.
Have fun, learn everything you can, and you never know, you may find you like it as a career.

I am an industrial mechanic and install large motors, reduction gears pumps and process equipment. There are 3 women that work in the same department as myself. One will get right in there and work right along side you, She may not be the most knowledgeable but she is willing. The second is very knowledgeable but spends more time on the cellphone talking to her babysitter or her boyfriend , or whoever, than she does working. The third is very knowledgeable and able, but whether she helps you or not depends on whether she feels like it or not. She will play the "period card" if she does not like the job or the area that the job is in. Of the three I prefer the first. She is willing to learn and I have no issues with her. Either the first or the second could be Men. I have no problem with women mechanics. Still there are die hard people from the "old school" way of thinking, that believe a woman's place is in the home. Yes there are some of these kind of people out there. You will pick up the vibe right away. They are arrogant, condescending, think they know it all and will respond to you quite often with sarcasm. Do not waste your time trying to change the way they think. It would be a lot of wasted energy and effort. Let them think what they want. Women, can do anything they want if they are of a mind to do it.

Love it! Sure there will be a few lames, but there's always one or two right? For the most part, guys like it. I went to MCI where there were 2 females in my brakes and suspension class. They didn't have too many problems, and most guys thought they were different at first, but half way through the class - the one girl was very cool and they both did well. There are 2 very knowledgeable females on this site from time to time. I think its a smart idea. Knowing what's going on will leave you less likely to get ripped off in the future. You seem smart and you shouldn't have any problems keeping up. Very best of luck!

Go for it! I'm a 39 year old married man and have taken several so called "girls" classes. To me it broadens my knowledge and helps me understand certain aspects of the difference between men and women...And the end of class party was a riot....My wife loved the girls I was learning with and has made a few good friends through it. Likewise I've met a few of the boyfriends/husbands and have a good laugh. It's a bit worrying at first but after the initial week when people know you're serious then it's not an issue. Don't worry about social protocol do what YOU want to do!!! Enjoy and good luck! P.s I'm an ex Royal Marine so...........

I think it's a great opportunity to learn about cars.
It might save you money by doing your own repairs as well it's just great knowledge to have. As a man I took a auto mechanics in college because I needed the extra credits, to my surprise there were at least 5 women taking the course and they did better then some men in the class.
wise idea, knowledge you can pass on to your children.
Good luck and god bless....:>)

I think it's a great idea. I really doubt you're going to get crap about you being a female in auto class, I think many guys will accept it.
Out in the real world, that may be the case. If you're not planning to make a career/job out of it, there's nothing to worry about.

I don't think you'd be discriminated, let's be honest it's the 21st century and the world is more open to new things and is full of possibilities.
If you truly believe in it and would like to pursue it don't let anything stop you.

Good for you. I think everyone who owns a car should know at least the basics. There are plenty of dudes out there that don't know s**t about cars. So don't worry, that's what school is for......to learn.
