Why do my computer speakers make a faint ticking sound, like a clock?

They've been doing it for a while, and I usually notice at night, maybe because it's quiet at night so I can hear faint noises better. Just now (in the morning) I noticed it again, in addition to something resembling static. What gives?

It may be an electronic interference: when a cell phone is too near a speaker it starts to make sound. Or a theory I have is that too much electricity is flowing through it and the result is some static-y sound.
