No, it's free. To receive an FEIN, you can fax or mail the SS-4 form, call or file online. This page explains it all:http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=...

Applying for an EIN number is free of charge and can be completed online.
I've linked the IRS area below where you'll learn more about the application process.

Watch out! There are websites like www.EIN-GOV.US that looks like an official gov site but when you finish the application they require a fee at the end. This one said $129 for the application. When I called their Ph# I found out that they are a private firm that charges money to tell you what the free FEIN number is that you just applied for. They have the nerve to then ask for $149 for 1 day processing and $198 for 1 hour processing. Isn't the IRS aware that someone is doing this??? No doubt, that website is then also selling your name and all your "New Business" information on the form to marketing companies ready to inundate you with a thousand advertisments and emails... Obviously Google has this company the top placement on the "FEIN Application" search because the company paid for it so Google has no ethics either...

If you had in mind starting a smaller scale charity than the one Pat referenced to, you have choices. Pat is talking about an Incorporated Charity which, yes, takes MUCH more paperwork, filing, reporting, costs and manpower. However, a Charity Association is non-incorporated and is still a lot of work to begin, but easier regarding paperwork and methods. Also, if you take the time to do everything yourself the fee is $400-$850 to the IRS and then you would have state costs.

No it doesn't cost anything. I just did this two days ago. Go to the irs.gov website and apply online. You will have your EIN in a few minutes.
You can cut and paste this address also to take you right there.
