Can Neonatal Nurse Practitioners write prescriptions?
I'm currently in nursing school and I'm looking ahead to master's programs. I think I want to be a neonatal nurse practitioner, but I was wondering about the prescriptions. I know family nurse practitioners can write them, but does that apply to all nurse practitioners? Also, are there any restrictions on what you can prescribe and who you can prescribe it for? For example, if someone in my family got sick or a friend, could I write them a prescription for amoxicillin? Or is there some kind of rule against that?

Whether or not a NP can write prescriptions depends on the state. NPs are dependent prescribers. You can only write for what your physician says you can write. You cannot write for family or friends unless they are patients of your physician. A neonatal NP can only write for neonatal related prescriptions. If you write outside of your scope of practice, your license can be revoked.

It depends on a number of things... what state you are in, the physician you work under,etc... Most neonatal nurse practitioners deal with infants while in a hospital setting, so when writing for prescriptions, it is usually medication orders/treatment while the baby is actually in the hospital. Have you ever spent time in a NICU? I highly advise you do so... its a completely different world than any other hospital/medical setting.
