A Song within a Song, R&P...?
No, I wasn't refering to the song by Camel, but here it is anyway :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKLDI7uOLhQ&fmt=18
Good afternoon R&P :)
What songs can you name that make reference to another song within their lyrics?
This can be a direct lyric quote, or mention of a title.
Some of mine :
At the start of the 1994 song 'Destiny' by Stevie Nicks, she re-uses the opening line from her 1983 song 'Enchanted' : "Crying in the morning, trying to be strong, waiting for the spring to turn into the fall. Love don't mean what it says at all, and destiny says that I'm destined to fall."
In the song 'Bombay Sapphires' stevie Nicks mentions "...it's like Purple Haze..." {Jimi Hendrix}
In the Guns N' Roses song 'You Could Be Mine' they include the line "...'cause I think we've seen that movie too", in direct reference to the Elton John song 'I've Seen That Movie Too'.
Fleetwood Mac ~ in both the Stevie songs 'Illume (9/11)' and 'Destiny Rules' she uses the lyrics "I like the coastal cities, I like the lights. I like the way the city blends into the ocean at night. It's like living on a working river; the coastline is glittering like a diamond snake in a black sky" {both on the album "Say You Will"}.
So people, what have you got for me?
BQ : Favourite flavour of yogurt?
And what's playing right now?

Punch :
I know have this beautiful image in my mind of an old-fashioned parchment paper letter, written in flowing script with an ink pen, and a matching envelope {probably with a penny-stamp}... one for the 'drawing list' :)

To the first responder: That's because anthrax played on a remake of
"Bring the Noise" with public enemy.
That new Kid Rock song mentions sweet home alabama (and steals the guitar riff).
At the end of (the extended version of) tainted love, Soft Cell plays part of a different song. (Baby, baby, where did our love go? I can't help myself, I want you and nobody else...)
unless I'm just imagining that. Hm.
Dresden dolls: In the middle of Gravity she says a line from the Doors'
(Hello, I love you, won't you tell me your name?)
In "That's Why I'm Here," James Taylor mentions that he'll sing "Fire and Rain" if people ask him to.
In Beat It, Michael Jackson says "But you want to be bad!" and then actually wrote a song about being "Bad." hehe, that one always amuses me.
Similarly, on one song on Dr. Dre's The Chronic, Snoop Dogg says the line "Murder was the case that they gave me," which turned into its own song later on Snoop's own album.
But my personal favorite:
Queen. In Bicycle Race, they mention fat bottomed girls and in Fat Bottomed Girls, they say "Get on your bikes and ride!" Beautiful.
BQ: Blueberry.
Fintroll, for some reason. But I'm amused.

Glass Onion by The Beatles - mentions Strawberry Fields and I am The Walrus and Lady Madonna and The Fool On The Hill.
I told you about strawberry fields,
You know the place where nothing is real
Well here's another place you can go
Where everthing flows.
Looking through the bent backed tulips
To see how the other half lives
Looking through a glass onion.
I told you about the walrus and me-man
You know that we're as close as can be-man.
Well here's another clue for you all,
The walrus was Paul.
Standing on the cast iron shore-yeah,
Lady Madonna trying to make ends meet-yeah.
Looking through a glass onion.
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah.
Looking through a glass onion.
I told you about the fool on the hill,
I tell you man he living there still.
Well here's another place you can be,
Listen to me.
Fixing a hole in the ocean
Trying to make a dove-tail joint-yeah
Looking through a glass onion

After Playing Jeremy at the VMAs, Eddie Vedder sings the first lines of "Sonic Reducer" by The dead Boys, before MTV cuts him off with a commercial break.
Oh and after a live Performance at Lollapalooza in 2007, before playing "Daughter" Edd says "This Song is About a Girl" Referring to the Nirvana song.

Stevie Nicks- Sing for the things...." You say I have everything. Well, I've been living on Dreams and Chains, but I sing for the things money can't buy me."
Stevie also makes reference the song Edge of Seventeen in the song Nightbird. "Just like the white winged dove, it's hard to see her face."
That's all that comes to mind at the moment other than Lindsay Buckingham making a reference to the Rumors album in the song Go Insane. "I've lost my power in this world and the Rumors are flying"

In the Manic Street Preachers song "Your Love Alone Is Not Enough" there's a line that goes "You stole the sun straight from my heart" which is a reference to one of their own songs of the same name.
The Beatles song "Glass Onion" has numerous references to some of their other songs.
The Bob Dylan song "I Want You" he sings "And because time was on his side" which is a reference to the Rolling Stones song "Time Is On My Side".
There's a line in the Sonic Youth song "Candle" that goes "It's safe to say candle, tonight's the day candle" which is considered to be a reference to the Neil Young album, "Tonight's The Night".
The song "Kung Fu" by Ash has the line "I haven't been the same since my teenage lobotomy" which is a reference to the Ramones song, "Teenage Lobotomy".
BQ: Strawberry
NP: Bold As Love - Jimi Hendrix

I think the Arctic Monkeys song that Lucy was thinking of was When The Sun Goes Down. I think there's a mention of Roxanne in that song anyway.

Call it a crap example but it's the only one I can think of.
In the last minute to minute and a half of Fallout Boy's "What A Catch, Donnie", you've got various singers singing lines from their previous singles ("Grand Theft Autumn...", "Sugar, We're Going Down" and "This Ain't A Scene...", for example). However, you do have to listen very closely - they're low in the mix.
EDIT: Example 2: Nightwish's "Fantasmic" steals the title from the Disney show "FantasMic!"
Example 3: The bridge of Panic!'s "Build God, Then We'll Talk" ("Raindrops on roses and girls in white dressed in sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses...") has strong connections with "My Favourite Things" ("The Sound of Music")
Tis all I have, unfortunately. *palms open in defeat*

Good Morning Silver...
I have just finished reading the most remarkable letter that was sent to me and I'm still taking in how intelligent and beautifully written it was... there's a YA question, who was the last person to blow you away with a letter.. at any rate, just stirring here in the states without benefit of coffee or nourishment.. but wanted to answer your terrific question.
the one I always think of, in addition to some terrific examples you have given and answers you have received is David Bowie's Young Americans which features the line.. " I heard the news today, oh boy.."
I'll try to think of another one..
BQ : Mountain Cherry
And what's playing right now? Camel.. what an epic length song!
thank you so much for sharing, I have heard of them and yet, not heard them....

Good Morning, Silver :)
In the song Memories, Leonard Cohen opens the song by singing "Frankie Laine, he was singing Jezebel". Later he references the song Stardust, played by the band at the dance he's at.
