Finding birth and marriage records of fairground people 19th century (Name of Fletcher)?

I'm trying to find out about my maternal grandmother's family. She is dead and has never spoken about her family as she was ashamed (possibly - certainly embarrassed) to admit that she was from fairground stock, most certainly brought up on the road. I'm quite sorry that she felt this way as throughout my childhood it was a glamorous dream of mine to be part of a fairground family.

Her surname was Fletcher, her family being a large and successful fairground family. I can't find any records except her father's marriage to my great-grandmother.

Does anyone know how I find any records of births etc among these itinerant people as they seem to have had scant regard for the official registration process!

Update:

Thank you Mark, that was very helpful!

Update 2:

Thank you all for this info. I'll be looking at all of them soon. It's so complicated trying to find anything about these people. The very nature of their lives makes following the trail of their lives very difficult. Fun though!

There is a Romany and Traveller family history society which has a page of links with some resources for people tracing fairground/showmen families. One of them has census lists which might help, travelling families would often appear on the census even if they didn't register births etc.

Good luck anyway, it sounds like a very interesting family tree to be tracing!

    Hi Laura

Not sure if you are from the UK or not. However, this still may help. For many years there was a newspaper available in the UK - and I suspect all over Europe - call The World's Fair. It was a periodical specifically for fairground people (it may still be available). Maybe if you Google them you may find someone there who can help you locate records of Fairground folk.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I was looking on the FamilySearch.org today and from a link on there to Genfair,I saw some available information about travelling people.

I had been looking under the parish records, you can buy cd's etc with information. It usually goes way back in time so it really depends on the years your searching for.
