What does it mean when my boyfriend calls me essay?

my boyfriend is Spanish but he mostly speaks english and every now and then he calls me essay and i have no idea what that means i think its Spanish but im not sure, any ideas?

    It's actually pronounced ese, meaning "that" or I believe it's slang for bud or friend.
