It is your systolic blood pressure. It is the force of the blood pressing against the walls of your arteries. You have two "types" of blood pressure-systolic and diastolic. Systolic should be higher and is the top number, and diastolic should be lower and if the bottom number. Say you bp was 120/80..you say 120 over 80. You want the systolic less than 120 and 120 to 139 is called prehypertension, meaning your blood pressure is getting too high. Diastolic should be less than 80 and anywhere from 80 to 89 is considered prehypertension. 140/90 is considered high bp. Your bp is lower at night and higher in the morning. Hope this helped!! (:

Blood pressure readings are measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and usually given as 2 numbers. For example, 110 over 70 (written as 110/70).
* The top number is the systolic blood pressure reading. It represents the maximum pressure exerted when the heart contracts.
* The bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure reading. It represents the minimum pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest.
Isolated systolic hypertension, however, is defined as a systolic pressure that is above 140 mm Hg with a diastolic pressure that still is below 90. This disorder primarily affects older people and is characterized by an increased (wide) pulse pressure. The pulse pressure is the difference between the systolic and diastolic blood pressures. An elevation of the systolic pressure without an elevation of the diastolic pressure, as in isolated systolic hypertension, therefore, increases the pulse pressure. Stiffening of the arteries contributes to this widening of the pulse pressure.

Blood pressure is defined as the pressure in your blood vessels per unit area.
The systolic blood pressure is the pressure of blood in the arteries when the left ventricle has just contracted. It is the higher of the two pressure which are normally documented.
The other blood pressure is the diastolic BP. It is generally the lower of the two pressures. Normal blood pressure is 120/80
In this equation 120 is the systolic BP and 80 is the Diastolic BP.

Some short explanation:
Systolic blood pressure is the pressure in your arteries when your heart is pushing the blood through your body. Like a waterhose: you take a waterhose and connect it to a tap, well the force of the water coming out of the waterhose is coparable with the systolic Blood pressure. A high systolic blood pressure means that your heart has to work hard to push the blood through your arteries. Normally it is because they are blogged with plaque (fat)
Now, the diastolic blood pressure. This is the force into your arteries when your heart is at rest, between beats. We take the same waterhose, but now we put one end into a waterbucket and we suck on the other end. If you wait a while you will see the water coming out on the other end (where we sucked) on its own. No watertap is pushing the water, right? This is the diastolic blood pressure.
A high diastolic blood pressure means that there could be a blockage in your artery. The blood is not free to flow.
I hope that cleared out some questions. If you need more information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Normally, about 120 in a healthy person when blood pressure taken. The other measurement is diastolic about 80 is healthy.

The upper number in the blood pressure pair. The amount of pressure in arteries when your heart squeezes.
