What is a MR Urogram?

My daughter has had some problems with reflux in her right kidney, and a cyst on her bladder. She's had a ton of tests done, and the next is a MR Urogram. I can't find any info on how they perform this test. My daughter is five - does anyone know what they will do? Thanks!

    As Eltombar... said,

They will put your daughter in a machine that has a big tube like part, and the table she is on, will move slowly through the tube...jerking and make a lot of noise.

This might scare a 5 year old, so if she has a favorite "something" to hold that soothes her, you might want to bring it. She is going to need to be very still while the MRI is running...so tell her about the "ride" she is going to get to take, and practice with her lying very still. Perhaps even some headphones with a children's story to listen to to take her mind off of it.

It's like any picture, if you move, the picture is blurry.

Also, the dye that Eltombar... mentioned, that means an IV, which might upset her, and is really the only discomfort in the procedure. When the contrast goes in, a warm feeling will go over the body, and it may make her feel like she has urinated.

The room will be probably cold, so you can ask the techs there to get her some warm blankets. They can bring pillows to make her more comfortable.

You might want to ask your doctor, if he thinks she might need a little sedative to help her deal with the IV and the length of time she has to lay quietly. Also, might consider having a full glass of juice or something right after the procedure to help flush the system.

    Mr Urogram

Basically it's a scan of the kidneys, ureters (tubes from kidneys to bladder) and the bladder. MR is magnetic resonance (also called MRI).

Before the scan, your daughter will be injected with a dye that enters the blood stream and passes through the kidney, ureters and bladder and shows up brightly on the scan.

The scan takes place in a tube like thing and takes about 20 minutes. It takes lots of pictures of inside and the dye will show the shape and structure of the urinary tract so that can spot any problems.

    Hope this helps.
