i don't know if they do this often, but depending on who's working, sometimes the people at MAC will give you free samples. One time a guy gave me a sample of an eye primer and it's lasted me over a year! I'm still using it to this day and I didn't even have to pay for it! Maybe you could outright ask for a sample (but i don't think it would work with eyeshadows or powdery makeup)

When you go to the make up counter in nicer department stores, like Macy's, you can usually ask for samples. ANd if they don't have any just use the sample things that they have out there...
