Actually slang. Derived from how the conservatives in france, during the French revolutin, sat on the right side of their governing house (whatever that was). In America, (and this is widely misunderstood by college students) Right Wing refers to conservatives who, by their nature, favor a small limited government with little power and little control over the people, with most of the power residing within the local state governments.

They would rather have corporate control, they are mostly racist, white, rich, old, greedy bastards. The would have sex with their mothers if they could make a profit from it. They believe that power and wealth should remain in the hands of 1% of the world's population while the remaining 99% starve, that health care should be privatized so the poor can't afford basic medication, that a rape victim living on welfare should be forced to care for a baby she didn't even ask for, and that America is the only real country on Earth, while all those other countries they read about are just fakes invented by communists, then they changed from communists to terrorists.

They believe the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution takes precidence over the rest of the Constitution.

The rich should be tax-exempt, and that the middle and lower classes should have to foot the bill, also, a person who bitches when an under-funded government agency is unable to carry out its assigned task.

They think that programs such as welfare, medicare/medicaid and minimum wage are unconstitutional and should be banned.

They label everything and everyone they disagree with as being "Communist" or "Anti-American" or a "terrorist"

They are a group of bible thumping fuckwits who believe that white christian males are the only things that matter in the world. They will lie and cheat in order to get what they want. They are always racist and blame everything on the democratic leaders who were in office before, and then claim responsibility for every good thing that happens.

They worship Ronald Reagan like he was the second coming of Jesus.

Right wing politicians put faith in the individual. They define freedom as the power of the individual to make their own choices in life without interference from government. In right wing countries laws are created to maintain order and preserve the capitalist economic system.

Left wing politicians put faith in society. They define freedom as the power of individuals to reach their full potential with help from government. In left wing countries laws are created to improve society and reduce unfairness caused by the capitalist economic system by progressive reforms.

    Further clarification:

Despite common parlance and political party naming conventions right wing does not mean conservative and left wing does not mean liberal. Conservatives and liberals are concerned more with authority and matters of social cohesion, whereas left wingers and right wingers are concerned more with economics and the distribution of wealth.

Conservative politicians put faith in the established orders, particularly the traditions of church and family. They believe a strong society is based around these principles. Being conservative they are generally against risk taking in society, fearing unintended consequences.

Although many right wing politicians are also conservative they do not correlate completely. In the UK for instance - Margaret Thatcher, a famous right winger was less conservative than Gordon Brown from the left.

Liberal politicians tend to put less faith in the traditions of church and family. They are pragmatic to the realities of modern life and seek progress as a way of dealing with problems. In government they believe it is better to take risks in policy making, dealing with any unintended consequences in the same manner.

Right wing and conservative coalitions fit well together and parties which support their policies come from traditionalists (old money) and industrialists (new money). This contrasts with left wing and liberal coalitions which often embrace radical ideas including those which favour the poor and minorities. Their origins and support base includes movements such as trade unionists and environmentalism.
