swollen feet on the elderley?

My father of 81 has had swollen feet for the last 2 days, he doesnt have a lot of exercise, is losing his eyesight and has chronic bronchitis and afraid to say smokes 30 cigs a day.

We went to drive him to his Doctors 12 miles away yesterday and he couldnt get his shoes or slippers on and decided not to go and stayed indoors.

Any idea why he would have swollen feet?

Update:

I do live in UK, but live 30 miles from him. We live in Devon.

inactivity can cause swollen feet, when people get to this age, because they are a bit achey they tend not to move as much, where it would be better for them to move more, my mother in law is the same, we live about 50 yards from the promenade, there is a bench every 50yds, yet will she go for a walk, we have said you can have a sit down every 50 yards, but unless she has to go out for a reason, she wont go, she even said what do you want me to do, walk the streets, we said yes, everyone else does, then she complains that her ankles are swollen at night because all she has done is sit on her bum all day, heat and high blood pressure can also cause swollen ankles, so he does need to go to the docs really, good luck

You will get better detail than I am going to give. He may well have circulation problems.

He must stop smoking although this will probably be too late but he must see a doctor even if you have to call one in.

Hopefully you are in the UK and not primitive America so you will have free medical treatment.
