My phone just fell in the pool?

I was sitting next to the pool and I got up. Apparently my phone was in my lap or something because when I got up I heard a splash. I looked down at the pool and saw my Verizon enV on the bottom of the pool. After I jumped into the FREEZING water and got the phone out the screen was still bright but then it vibrated and then turned off. Now my phone is drying off and so is my battery and we tried to charge it and turn it on but its not working.

2 questions:

1. is all of the stuff on my phone gone? i had important pictures and numbers on it and I'm afraid its all gone

2. how do I turn it back on?

10 points for anyone who answers both questions and that work the best

It is absolutely most crucial that you un-plug it and remove the battery! The voltage across the battery causes electrolysis of all of the metal parts inside, slowly but surely rusting all of those precious components.

It will probably take about 30 hours for your phone to dry out. Remove as much plastic from it as you can (open it, remove the battery cover, remove any cosmetic plastic plates, etc) and shake it to get water out. A dry, warm place will help; some people will go as far as putting it in the oven, but even if the air is below 100 deg, the radiation from the heating element can cause damage.

Also, if the water was particularly dirty and your phone was already "soaked", rinsing it with distilled water can help to stop the nasty chemical-based electrolysis that causes all the rusting, but you'll want to get it as dry as possible soon after that.

Once your phone is dry (it's hard to tell, so give it PLENTY of time), power it up. Some batteries intentionally self-disable when wet, so you might have to plug in the charger.

Your data probably isn't gone, especially if you get your battery out within a few minutes. Your screen is fairly sensitive; it might be dead, but you can probably transfer the important data to a computer without a working screen.

    Good luck!

    Other notes:

Don't put it in a plastic bag: it will seal in the moisture. Silica gel is a great idea though... even dry rice will work. Keep the phone somewhere in the open, where it is dry. Moving air can help too.

Your phone numbers are probably on your SIM card, which should be fine, but your photos and music are not!

WD-40 and rubbing alcohol (the higher the % the better) can displace the water, and they're less likely to damage the components. Note that WD-40 will probably not leave the phone, making your screen always look greasy, and alcohol can melt some plastic components... However, this can help you get your data, even if your phone isn't pretty afterwards.

If you are or have someone mechanically inclined, you can even disassemble the phone. Use Q-tips or paper towels to absorb the water. Even after, give it plenty of time to air-dry anything you can't access.

    1. Your numbers should all be saved on your sim card. If they were on your phone, and you can't get your phone working again they will most likely all be gone. I suggest going to https://backupassistant.vzw.com/mb/?skininfo=110, to set up a backup account in case something like this happens again.

    2. Well i have heard of several things you can do to try to dry it out. First of all take the whole phone apart so its in as many pieces as possible (remember how to put it back together though ;-) then you could put it in a big bowl of dry rice. Or i have heard putting it in the oven at about 275 degrees for a while works too. otherwise get a big industrial fan and blow it off for a good week then try turning it on. Hope that helps.

Take the battery out of your phone and dry off each piece.

Put them in a plastic bag.

Add a packet of Silica to the bag. (Silica is that stuff found in new purses, shoes etc., feels like round beads)

Close the bag and let it sit for a few hours/days by the sun or somewhere hot.

Try fooling around with it after it has sat long enough.

If it doesn't work within 30 mins - 1 hour, you need a new phone! Sorry!

The exact same thing happened to me except mine fell in a toilet :S, what you need to do is let the phone dry out in its own time and no the memory will not be gone, i left mine of my window sill for 1 and a 1/2 weeks and it was absoulutey fine!

Press the normal button for turning it back on.

    hope this helps

I had a similar thing happen to me, but mine fell into a creek. I took out my battery, sim card let them dry. Left my phone open until it was good and dry. Put it back together turned it on worked and nothing was lost. Hope yours is ok!

Take your battery out right away and leave it out for a few days. but don't mess with it or touch it because you could ruin it. Don't try to get another one or lie to your phone company because they can tell if you got your phone wet. There should be a white dot on the back of your battery that turns red if you get it wet.

Turn the phone off. Remove the battery. Let it dry out for a few days.It maybe ok after that.

    1. your stuff shouldn't be gone, i think it should still be there.

    2. turn it on normaly after it's fully dried.

    how are you drying it?

i've heard that you can put the phone in your oven at a low heat, and it should dry it out.

  • 1 decade ago

no you didnt lose all your stuff.

and there is a possability for saving your phone and making it turn back on.

1 way is to take the batterie out and set it on top of an alarm clock

the 2nd way is to put it in a standing dryer so it wont turn while the dryer is spinning.

worked for me. hope i helped(:

    okayy:

    1) no, it's all on your simcard. You can ask someone that works for Verizon that, it's all on ur simcard.

    2) Take it in to a near by Verizon to try and turn it on.

    good luck!!!! :)
