How long can I run a phone extension?

I have a cabin about 1000 feet from my house. Does anyone know if I can run an extension that far without losing signal? What size and type of phone cable should I use? I'm also hoping I have enough signal for a DSL connection.

As EK says, the DSL may be a lost cause.

DSL quality is highly dependent on the total length of the wire between you and the switch - not the as-the-crow-flies distance, or the driving distance, but literally the number of feet of cable.

Up to about 10,000 feet, DSL usually works, though at slower speeds at the longer distance. Somewhere in the range from 10,000 to15,000 feet, DSL service is often not possible (depends on a number of factors).

3 options as I see it:

    1) Call the phone company and ask if they can tell you how far your residence is from the CO (Central Office) that supplies your service. The customer service person will probably not know themselves, but ought to be able to put you in touch with one of the field techs who does know - of find out from one and get back to you. If it is well within the 10,000 foot range, then the additional cable would probably be OK.

    2) Get 1000 feet of phone cable and give it a try. Sorry that I don't know what size you should get to minimize signal loss.

    3) Look up some wireless routers, as EK suggested, and see if they have distance specs that would provide the coverage that you need. Probably less expensive (and less work) to get a router that would work.

    Good luck.

The phone will probably work, the DSL is another story, if it works or not depends on the length of wire that is going between your house and the central office. Your best bet is just to use a wireless router.

You can at least get voice.

As for the cable, get phone drop cable, likely underground if you will be burying it. Your phone company may or may not sell it to you. Mine does, and it was rather reasonable.

For DSL, you may look into Etherloop, or your own DSLAM.

If you are not so far from the Telco switch board, it may work. Goodluck.
