How to move a washing machine 800 miles and still have it work after the move?!?

I'm moving house and my mother says that (at least as far as she remembers) it's very hard to move a washing machine and still have it working at the news house. Something to do with balancing out the drum again. Does anyone know if this is a load of rubbish, whether it's something HER mother told her (ie: dates back to the 19th century!) or what? Thanks!

Update:

It's a front-loader. Thanks for the tips!

Make sure the washer is empty and dry inside. Take a couple of lengths of packing tape and tape the drum out through the top opening and to the top or side of the washer. Now tape the lid closed. You can store the hoses inside the washer if they're dry. Coil up the electrical cord and tape it to the back of the washer. Now you're ready to transport. When you set it up n the new location be sure to level the machine. BTW, you should secure your dryer in much the same manner.

It can be moved it won't hurt the machine. But once at the new house and in it location using a level the machine needs to be re-level or on the spin cycle it will walk..
