yes could be pump or injectors dont run if diesel in sump will wreck engine and clutch if manual gearbox sounds costly

Theoretically yes since the drive shaft of the pump is driven by the timing chain and thus the front end of the pump is inside the front timing chain cover. If the seal(s) are bad then fuel can get inside the sump.
Realistically no, since if there is a leak then this would lower the fuel pressure in the common rail which the pressure sensor would see and make it set a fault and check engine light.
Fuel from the injectors can only get down into the sump if the piston rings are so wornout (which means that the engine would run rough and be hard to start due to loose compression). This is very unlikely.

I am on pump #3 in my 2009 335i. It is a royal pain and I would not buy a car with this problem. Too bad since the rest of the car has been fine. OOPS, wait I forgot about the fact that I had to have the cam bearings replaced as well as a VANOS solenoid. The reliability of my BMW sounds more like a Yugo. Too bad I bought it rather than lease it. Now I am stuck.
