Por qué Estados Unidos se llama EE.UU?

Por qué hay dos E, y dos U ..? por qué no se llama E.U ?!

    es un metodo de abreviatura por truncación que hace alusión a un algo en plural, si colocamos E.U puede significar solo Estado Unido, por regla se duplican las siglas y ya esta en plural,

    Ejemplo FF.AA (fuerzas armadas y asi no lo confundimos con fuerza Aerea F.A
