Download speed is slow?

I am trying to download something that should take 2 hrs but it says it will take 8hrs. It is downloading at 17.2KB/S but my broadband is 100.0 mbps. Why is it so slow and taking so long?

Update:

I am downloading from the microsoft website, I just bought Office 2007.

Clean your Registry can make your computer faster

Over time, you install new programs, uninstalled unimportant programs, update software's, install new devices,

download files from the web, etcetera, hence embarking all records in the registry system.

This is normal, but it is not wise to leave it untouched.

Once in a while, you have to check and remove files that are no longer in use to maintain the speed of your PC.

    Clean registry make pc faster.

Download speed you observe depends on a lot of factors.

    1. Your bandwidth itself might be limitted. Check with your ISP about speed details. Also use some speed testing websites that can tell you the max download speed you can get.

    2. If you are downloading from a busy server, changes are the bandwith is limitted by the incapability of the server to serve you at your maximum bandwidth. In this case, download accelerators do help. There are a few.... Download accelerator plus, SKDownloader, Internet downloader.. etc

    3. If you have a lot of programs running which accesses the web frequently, chances are they are consuming your bandwidth silently in the background. Try shutting down processes in your computer you don't need while downloading stuff.

See this article. It has a few tips to increase download speed.

Your path to the fastest server in the world can still be slow. Connect to http://www.speedtest.net/ If your speed is considerably (like 20%) lower than you're paying for, call your provider and have them check your line. If the speed from speedtest is good, you're just seeing a slow internet path - and, since the paths are determined moment by moment by the routers on the internet, there's nothing anyone can do. I still get 30kbps and slower downloads on my server farm, which has a 120MB/s connection (LARGE fiber pipe right to the server room). The internet itself won't get any faster for 5-10 years, at the earliest. But one nice thing about downloading - you can start the download, go to sleep and it'll be finished when you wake up. (Contrary to popular belief, computers don't get lonely - they'll work if you're not sitting there.)

BTW, your connection to your modem may be 100mbps, but the modem's connection to your provider is a LOT slower - and the download goes at the speed of the slowest part of the connection. (17.2kbps is VERY slow, though - check your connection speed with speedtest.)

    Microsoft has bad servers.

    A) Your LAN might be 100Mbps, but I highly doubt your actually internet is 100Mbps unless you live in a country like Japan, at which point explains your poor connection to the microsoft server.

    B) Are there any updates on your system currently downloading data as well?

    C) Find out your true internet speeds, not advertised: http://www.speedtest.net/

Your internet speed might be 100MBPS but it's the rate the server is uploading to you that determines the speed. Try opening some ports on your router if your torrenting the file.

it might be speedy at your end but who knows about the other end? I mean your server. Mentioning the server will make us reply in better ways.
