Can dogs be allergic to...?

I was wondering if a dog could be allergic to gerbils. My dog started coughing (hacking, sounds like shes trying to cough up something) and sneezing last week, and since she is a pug she doesn't always sneeze, so when that happens she gets the reverse sneezing attacks, and it where she is gasping for air and looks and sounds like she is going to die, she gets those a lot, but since last Weds when I started pet sitting my a gerbil for family, started all this shes been having more of those attacks.

So I was wondering if it were possible for her to be allergic, if not that, the first thing I thought of was kennel cough, I just got her back Tuesday, but she was up-to-date on all her shots. I thought I would ask here before I had to call someone and ask them to take me to the vet since, my family went out of town for vacation and I dont drive.
