All dogs are good with kids honey, even the so called "dangerous" pittbull can be a lamb around people if trained right and looked after well. That said,a Labrador can start biting everything that moves if you don't know how to handle dogs correctly. So you see,it really depends on the way you raise them.
All of the dogs you mentioned have the potential to be excellent family dogs. The Ridge back is a very active dog that appreciates being treated like a dog and not a toy.
The Pyrenean is a wonderful flock guardian who will protect what he considers "his" with his life.
The Samoyed can tend to be a "one person" dog,but get on well with most people.
The Chihuahua is a delicate little feisty dog that can become very territorial and protective if not trained.
The Miniature Pinscher is another breed that can suffer from "small dog syndrome",but they are very good dogs otherwise.
Maltese can handle a surprising amount of exercise and make loving companions.
The Japanese Spitz is excellent with kids and is a great guard dog.
The Rough Collie is very intelligent and makes a great pet for children.
The Boxer can be very stubborn and "pawy" but makes a strong, faithful and friendly dog.
So there you go. (:

Out of the breeds you have listed, Samoyeds and Collies are the best with children. Samoyeds often have a special affinity towards children, and remain playful until old age. Most Samoyeds, especially if raised with children, are good at moderating their play to match the age of the child, but some adolescent Samoyeds can play too hard for young children. They are a friendly happy breed and get along with just about everyone. If they want a Samoyed, further research would be necessary. They are great dogs but not for everybody.
Collies are more mellow and laid back than Samoyeds. They truly have a gentle nature and not a mean bone in their body. There are more health issues in the breed though. Again, research.
Boxers can be great with older kids. A young boxer can be too physical for young kids.

I would say the real issue is 'are the kids good with dogs'. I have seen many a wonderful dog - turned into a fear biting dog because of the cruelty of children.
As a Breed - I would say that the rough collie would probably be the most relaible of the list you provided. Chihuahua and min pin's can be quite 'sharp' with children in protecting themselves from being tramplerd. Well bred boxers are also a delight - note I said well bred.
In general a lot will depend on the ability of the family to provide exercise and activity to the dog they choose to keep them stimulated and obedient members of the pack.

I can answer for Ridgebacks. I have friends who have small children, and the dogs are good with them, but they are managed well. Meaning you do not leave them alone until the children are old enough to discipline the dog.
Ridgebacks have very strong personalities. I have 6 here, one pup who is 9 mos old loves children, but he also likes to grab their shirts and he does slime them, and some children freak out at that.
I sold pups to 2 families with 4 yr old boys. One family had no problem at all, but they already had a dog, and their 4 yr old boy ran and played with the dogs with abandon.
the other family had to watch the pup all the time, because their little boy was 'soft' and he said to his mom at one point "Leo doesn't like me, does he." Leo is not a really dominant dog, but as a pup he played with the little boy just as if he was another pup.
That means some chewing, knocking down, etc. Ridgebacks play very physically, slamming into each other makes them very happy. Some children are frightened at that behaviour.
So there are all kinds of issues associated with Ridgeback pups and children, and some Ridgeback adults will not tolerate children and what they do naturally, i.e., put their fingers in doggie's mouth, grab doggie around the neck etc.
My stud dog would not tolerate this, and I would not even leave him alone with a child for one second. He would not bite, but if backed into a corner, I'm not sure what would happen.

I've lived with a few of these breeds they all can be trained to be good with kids, some a just naturally better than others. The more patient your dog is the more likely it will be good with kids.

Look, all dogs are good with kids, provided the dog has been around kids since it was a puppy and the kids are tought how to treat and handle a dog properly
- Anonymous1 decade ago
Any dog can be good with kids, it's to do with the owner, discipline, and training. Yes, some breeds of dogs are rough but with proper training, any dog can learn to get along with children.
But other than that, i have a book which says that Rough Collies when hyper can get a bit snappy...

If I were to choose from your list for dogs good with children I would have to pick Rough Collie. They are wonderful with children.
