It's a good camera. Only thing that bothers me is it has no viewfinder. You want to shoot a distant shot and maybe you have nothing to lean on to be still. At least with a viewfinder you can press camera against your cheeks for steadiness. And if you buy a camera with no viewfinder you're left with using LCD screen which drains batteries.

I know it seems like more money and more money. But I would choose between the Canon SX10 IS(has viewfinder) which also has aperture/shutter priority as does the Sony and a basic DSLR.

I used the Sony DSC-H2 for 3 yrs taken 3500 shots and works perfect. It has 12X optical zoom. I now use a Nikon DSLR.

$300- is not that far away from say a basic Canon DSLR.

For $300- you would want lots of zoom. But your next step upward would be a DSLR, I'm thinking about $150- more.

I am by no means a camera expert, actually just the opposite but I am constantly amazed at how great of pictures my Kodak Z7590 takes. I do not think that model is still for sale but the newer Z or DX models are all about the same. They have bigger zoom than many 10x-12x, are a big seller, and decently priced. You could certainly get one at well under $500 but since you mention you would spend $500 maybe you are looking for something a little more. For $300-$400 you could get the Kodak camera with all accessories (dock, case, etc) If you want a good everyday use camera with a good zoom then I would go with the Kodak.

Sony cameras suck, don't do it. go to bestbuy.com and look at cameras there because customers leave a lot of ratings and it's a good way to know if you're really getting a good product. I would recommend a Canon, they always have the highest rating and even their low priced cameras are amazing.
