    The better driver would "win".

Although the '98 is less powerful, it's lighter. Assuming similar tyres and suspension, the biggest variable is driver expertise.

A good drag launch is more difficult in a manual transmission car than it looks, especially with another car next to you. On a road course, expertise makes a major difference in being able to use all the braking and cornering ability of the car.

check your engine sizes. from what i have always knows bmws rated their cars by series then engine size... my 3 series has a 2.8l motor so it is a 328. now as far as specs go i know that the e36(your 323) has a belt driven raidator fan which pulls power from your crank, the e46(325) has an electric raidator fan taking no power from the crank. Now the e36 is much lighter than the e46... so there are some differences that i know of other than maybe compters and crap like that... now if the engine sizes are what i think they are which is a 2.5l and a 2.3l then i would imagine that the 325 would win but then again... driver has a lot to do with it. i would go with the 325
