I don't really know Westchester, though from what I gather it's fairly upscale and pricy. NJ, which is where I live, is a mixed bag: there are poor, middle class, and wealthy areas, depending on where in Northern NJ we're talking about. As for Long Island, that's a pretty expensive area, especially the Hamptons. I guess I'd recommend NJ, though- specifically, Bergen County. It's convenient to NYC, and with the exception of some very expensive towns (including but not limited to Upper Saddle River and Park Ridge), relatively affordable. I hope that helps.

There are a lot of factors such as are you commuting to NYC, if so, where? For example, if you need to go to Queens, Long Island would be much easier than NJ but, Manhattan, especially lower Manhattan is much easier from NJ.
All three have very high property taxes. All three have good school systems (be sure to check with your realtor for more information)
If you want mountains and hills select NJ or Westchester, if you want your terrain more flat then select Long Island.
All three offer good train service to NYC.
So it's really a matter of how long you are willing to commute, how much property you want or need, and, of course price.
