The great thing about belly dance is that it can be learned at almost any age. There is actually a preference for more mature dancers because they have the life experience to help with musical interpretation.
I didn't start dancing until I was 20, and most of the women I know didn't start dancing until they were in their 40s! By the time you're 40, you're going to have a lot of experience and your dance will be richer because you are getting a head start.
Have you looked at Shira's directory of teachers yet? http://www.shira.net/directory/dir-us-fl.htm This is for Florida, and there are a lot of teachers. If you can't find a teacher through there, you should join the belly dance forum at http://www.bhuz.com/ because there is a teacher directory there, and you can just post that you are looking for a teacher in a specific area if you are still have trouble locating one.
It's really good that you recognize the need to have a live teacher - it's so much better than videos! A teacher will make sure your posture is good so you don't get injured. She should also teach you about the culture, costuming, and musical interpretation. You'll also get personal feedback and modifications, which is something you can't get with a video.
Good luck with finding a class! You'll have a lot of fun!

First off I would strongly suggest going to the dancer directory at www.shira.net. That's where I've found my first teacher. If you're anywhere in the Miami area I would suggest attending any of the workshops at the Miami Bellydance Competition labor day weekend. It's an expensive workshop, but there are some world class dancers teaching there.
Also, Bozenka, a former Bellydance Superstars member, teaches in Miami. She has taught many celeb clients, including Shakira.

I would take a class. I bought a DVD and it was very hard to learn for me. Can you do a figure 8 with your hips? It was stuff like that. They didn't really explain how to do it.

go to any old arab lady (like my aunt for instance) ask them for belly dance lessons. i'm not joking, you'll be fully taught in less than 3 weeks.
DO NOT try out those big-time dance studios, its just a waste of money.

I don't know much about bellydancing but I don't think you're too young to learn. And I know there's some show on Fit Tv about bellydancing. That's all I can help you with though.
